What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered that the signal from the ignition coil for cylinder 5 is too high, which mainly points to a short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal wire. The coil control is then not as it should be, and cylinder 5 may misfire. The connectors and wiring to the coil are therefore the first things to look at.
Possible causes
- Short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal wire
- Contact resistance in the connectors
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1Check that the connector at ignition coil 5 is fully seated and dry, free from oxidation
- 2Follow the signal wire from the coil and look for chafing or places where it may have been pinched against a sharp edge
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the coil has no contact with plus or with other wires
- 4Read and clear the code, then road test to see whether it returns
- 5If the wire is intact: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp is on
- The engine may misfire on cylinder 5
