What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has detected that cylinder 5 is misfiring, and the misfire affects emissions. The fault is permanent, meaning it is active right now. The cause can be ignition or fuel related, but uneven compression and air leakage can also give the same fault code.
Possible causes
- Defective spark plug
- Blocked or leaking injector
- Uneven compression
- Air leakage
- Faulty fuel pressure
- Low fuel level, or contaminated or faulty fuel
What you can do
- 1Read and note that the code refers to cylinder 5, clear it and road test
- 2Check that the engine oil level is correct
- 3Check the spark plug in cylinder 5 for insulation damage or signs of moisture in the well
- 4If there are codes for the camshaft control, troubleshoot those before cylinder 5
- 5Look for air leaks at the intake hoses and connections
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop measure fuel pressure and compression with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine misfires
- The engine is hard to start
- Performance is worse
- Idle is uneven
- Not all cylinders are firing
What the fault can affect3
- Catalytic converter diagnosis is switched off
- Leak diagnosis is switched off
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
