What does this fault code mean?
Cylinder 6 is misfiring, and the engine control module chooses the fault code based on how serious the misfire is: either an effect on emissions or a risk of damage to the catalytic converter. The misfire can be detected already at start-up or while driving, and if it continues the catalytic converter may be damaged.
Possible causes
- Low fuel level
- Repeated cold starts that do not let the engine warm up between starts
- Incorrect fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Water in the spark plug wells
- Damaged VVT unit
- Uneven compression
What you can do
- 1Check that there is fuel in the tank and that the fuel is the correct grade
- 2Check the engine oil level
- 3Check the spark plug in cylinder 6 for damage to the insulation
- 4Look for moisture in the spark plug wells and in the connectors to the ignition coils
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 6 at idle and see whether it rises
- 6Have a workshop measure fuel pressure, residual pressure and compression with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice5
- The malfunction indicator lamp flashes
- The engine misfires
- The engine is difficult to start
- Deterioration in performance
- Uneven idle
What the fault can affect3
