What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module reads a signal from the ignition coil for cylinder 3 that is too low. The fault can lie in the wire, which may be shorted to ground, or in the coil. As long as the signal is too low, cylinder 3 may not be fired correctly and the engine can misfire.
Possible causes
- A short to ground in the wire
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1Check that the connector to ignition coil 3 is clean and fully seated
- 2Look at the wire from the coil for chafing or pinch damage, especially where it bends
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire has no connection to ground (the body), with the connector unplugged at the coil
- 4Read the code, note that it refers to ignition coil 3, clear it and road test
- 5Have a workshop confirm the condition of the coil with diagnostic equipment once the wire has been checked
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp is lit
- Cylinder 3 does not fire properly
