What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module is not receiving a signal from the ignition coil for cylinder 4. Because the coil gets no control signal, cylinder 4 can misfire. The fault may be in the connectors, the wire or the coil, so the connectors are a good place to begin.
Possible causes
- Poor contact at the connectors
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1Check that the connector to ignition coil 4 is fully seated and not corroded
- 2Follow the wire from the coil and look for breaks in the insulation or chafing against edges
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire is not broken, with the connector unplugged at the coil
- 4Read the code, note that it refers to ignition coil 4, clear it and road test
- 5If the wire is intact but the fault remains: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights
- Cylinder 4 may not fire correctly
