What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module receives a signal from the fuel tank pressure sensor that does not match what it expects. The sensor, the hoses in the fuel system or a major leak can give a wrong reading. The engine control module then assumes a fuel tank pressure of zero, which can affect the leak diagnosis.

    Possible causes

    • Defective hoses in the evaporative emission system
    • Defective fuel tank pressure sensor
    • Major leak in the fuel tank system

    What you can do

    1. 1Make sure the filler cap on the fuel tank sits correctly, and that the sealing ring is intact and clean
    2. 2Look for leaks in the hoses and connections of the evaporative emission system, especially at loose joints
    3. 3Replace or repair damaged hoses and components where a leak is found
    4. 4Have you got a diagnostic tool: read the tank pressure in live data at idle and check that the value changes when you activate the canister purge valve
    5. 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the fuel tank pressure sensor

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • No noticeable symptoms for the driver

    What the fault can affect1

    • The engine control module assumes zero fuel tank pressure

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
