What does this fault code mean?
The fault code shows that the canister purge valve or the EVAP canister shut-off valve is not working as it should, either through a leak or because the valve is clogged. The valves control fuel vapours between the fuel tank and the canister, which is the carbon filter. The fault is checked when the leak diagnostic is carried out and is stored if one of the components is faulty.
Possible causes
- Leaking hoses at the canister purge valve
- Defective canister purge valve
- Defective EVAP canister shut-off valve
- Clogged hoses in the evaporative emission system
What you can do
- 1Make sure the filler cap is seated properly and its seal is undamaged
- 2Check the hoses and hose connections at the canister, the canister purge valve and the tank for cracks, loose connections or blockage
- 3Repair any leak or replace damaged hoses
- 4Have you got a diagnostic tool: activate the canister purge valve and the EVAP canister shut-off valve separately and check that each opens and closes
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the canister purge valve and the EVAP canister shut-off valve if the fault returns after these repairs
