What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module tests the fuel tank system by pressurising it and seeing how quickly the pressure rises. The fault code is set when the leak is so large that it counts as a major leak, for example in the tank, the filler pipe, the filler cap, the canister, the valves or the hoses between them. The fault turns on the warning lamp, and the filler cap is the most common cause.

    Possible causes

    • Filler cap missing, or not fully tightened
    • Major leak in the tank, filler pipe, canister, EVAP valve, leak diagnostic unit or the hoses between them
    • Fuel level gauge not working, which may point to a fault in the central electronic module (CEM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the filler cap is tightened and that the seal is not damaged
    2. 2Check hoses and connections at the tank, the filler pipe, the canister and the EVAP valve visually for damage and loose parts
    3. 3If the fuel gauge in the instrument panel does not work, troubleshoot the central electronic module (CEM) first
    4. 4Have a workshop check the software in the engine control module on cars of model year 2004 to 2008 before the leak is searched for
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment run a quick test of the fuel tank system and search for the leak if it cannot be seen during the visual check
    6. 6Read the fault codes again after the repair and check that the fault does not return

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
