What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module compares engine fuel consumption with how the fuel level changes, and it also reacts to large variations in the level while the car is stationary. The fault code is set when the signal from the fuel level sensor, which is sent over the CAN network, does not match. It is an information code that never occurs alone, so troubleshooting is based on another fault code.
Possible causes
- Defective fuel level sensor
- Contact resistance in the fuel level sensor connector
- Damaged fuel level sensor
What you can do
- 1Troubleshoot the other fault code that was set first, since this code never occurs alone
- 2Check the fuel level sensor connector and connections for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Have you got a diagnostic tool: read the fuel level in live data with the ignition on and check whether the value is reasonable and moves when the car is gently rocked
- 4An unreasonable value points to a permanent fault, and that must be remedied before the code is cleared
- 5A completely full tank can make the level change hard to see when the car is rocked, so do the check when the tank is partly full
- 6Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the fuel level sensor and its connector if the fault returns
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
