What does this fault code mean?

After refuelling, the engine control module checks that the fuel tank filler cap is in place, using a faster leak diagnostic. If it finds a leak after refuelling, this is interpreted as the filler cap being missing or not fitted properly, and the code is stored. The filler cap is usually the cause, but if the code for a major leak is also stored, that one should be troubleshot first.

    Possible causes

    • Fuel tank filler cap missing
    • Fuel tank filler cap not properly tightened

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuel tank filler cap is on and fully tightened, especially after refuelling
    2. 2Check the sealing ring in the fuel tank filler cap
    3. 3Look up whether the major-leak fault code is recorded in the engine control module; if so, fault-trace that code instead
    4. 4If no major leak code is stored: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment run a quick test of the fuel tank system to confirm that the fault is gone
    5. 5Clear the code only once the filler cap is correctly fitted, and check whether it returns after the next refuelling

    Symptoms you may notice1
