What does this fault code mean?
If the leak diagnostic unit has no fault, the engine control module runs a leak test of the fuel tank system. The fault code is set when it finds a minor leak, meaning a very small leak, in the tank, the filler pipe, the filler cap, the canister, the EVAP valve, the leak diagnostic unit or the hoses between them. The fault shows up as the malfunction indicator lamp lighting.
Possible causes
- A small leak in the fuel tank, filler pipe or filler cap
- A small leak in the canister, EVAP valve, leak diagnostic unit or the hoses between them
What you can do
- 1Have a workshop check the engine control module software on cars of model year 2003 to 2008 before the leak is searched for
- 2Check that the filler cap is on and fully tightened, and that its seal is undamaged
- 3Inspect hoses and joints at the unit, canister, EVAP valve and filler pipe by eye
- 4Have a workshop run a new quick test after the repair to confirm the problem is solved
- 5Have you got a diagnostic tool: read the tank pressure in live data at idle and check whether it falls when the canister purge valve is activated
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on
