What does this fault code mean?
If the leak diagnostic unit has no fault, the engine control module runs a leak diagnosis of the fuel tank system. If it finds a leak larger than the major-leak limit, for example in the tank, the filler pipe, the filler cap, the canister, the EVAP valve or the hoses between them, the fault code is set. A filler cap that is missing or not tightened is one of the causes.
Possible causes
- Fuel tank filler cap missing or not properly tightened
- Major leak in the tank, filler pipe, filler cap, canister, EVAP valve or in the hoses between them
What you can do
- 1Check that the filler cap is correctly fitted and that its seal is undamaged
- 2Check hoses and joints at the unit, the canister, the EVAP valve and the filler pipe by eye
- 3Loose caps and loose hose joints can be hard to find, so go through them carefully
- 4Have a workshop plug the canister-to-valve hose and run a new quick test, to see whether the leak is in the EVAP valve
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment run a quick test of the fuel tank system after the repair to check that the fault is gone
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on
