What does this fault code mean?

The fuel level is reported from the rear electronic module (REM) through the central electronic module (CEM) to the engine control module. The engine compares fuel consumption with how much the level falls, and if the level falls implausibly little the fault code is set. The fault may lie in the fuel level sensor or in either of the two modules.

    Possible causes

    • Fault in the rear electronic module (REM), which should be troubleshot first
    • Damaged fuel level sensor
    • Fault in the central electronic module (CEM), which should be troubleshot

    What you can do

    1. 1Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment read the fault codes in the REM and the CEM first, since the fault lies there
    2. 2Do not clear this code until the root fault has been remedied and its fault code cleared
    3. 3Check the connector to the fuel level sensor for oxidation and loose fit
    4. 4Have you got a diagnostic tool: read the fuel level in live data with the ignition on and see whether the value changes when you add fuel
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the fuel level sensor if the fault returns after the root fault has been remedied

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Fuel gauge shows a value that is too low

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
