What does this fault code mean?
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) controls how much exhaust gas is led back into the intake. If the flow is too low, or the valve jams shut, the fault code is set. The fault can come from a damaged EGR valve or a damaged EGR actuator, and a sticking valve can give the same symptoms.
Possible causes
- Damaged EGR valve
- EGR valve stuck in the closed position
- Damaged EGR actuator
What you can do
- 1Have you got a diagnostic tool: activate the EGR valve several times with the engine running and listen for a click from the valve to see whether it frees up
- 2Check that the intake system does not leak and that gaskets and hoses are intact
- 3Check the connector to the mass air flow sensor for contact resistance, oxidation and play
- 4Check that the wiring to the mass air flow sensor has no break
- 5Have a workshop check the EGR valve and replace it if it does not move when activated
Symptoms you may notice3
- Poorer performance
- The engine is hard to start
- Uneven idle
