ECM-441D
VOLVO
ECM-441D - Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control. Faulty signal
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the EGR valve, which feeds part of the exhaust back into the engine to lower emissions. The ECM has received a signal from the valve or its wiring that does not match the expected EGR control, so the EGR function is faulty.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, contact resistance or oxidation at the EGR valve connector
- Wiring to the EGR valve shorted to supply voltage
- Wiring to the EGR valve shorted to ground
- Break in the wiring to the EGR valve
- EGR valve overheated
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, erase it and test-drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Inspect the EGR valve connector for loose contacts, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Look for breaks and chafing in the wiring to the EGR valve
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the EGR valve position changes when the engine speed rises
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the valve and measure the signals if the fault returns
Symptoms you may notice3
- Emissions warning lamp (MIL) lit
- Message shown in the text display
- Check engine light lit
