ECM-444D
VOLVO
ECM-444D - Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control. Offset error
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) finds that the EGR valve or its wiring gives a shifted position, an offset, and therefore EGR control goes wrong. The code is set when the reading is clearly out of line, and the EGR valve and its wiring are the most likely places to look.
Possible causes
- Loose connections, contact resistance or oxidation at the EGR valve terminals
- Wiring to the EGR valve shorted to supply voltage
- Wiring to the EGR valve shorted to ground
- Break in the wiring to the EGR valve
- EGR valve sticks or has jammed
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Erase the fault code only after you have noted it, then test-drive the car
- 2Check the EGR valve connector for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check that the EGR valve is not clogged with dirt or soot, since it may then stick
- 4Look for breaks, chafing and shorts to ground or supply voltage in the wiring to the EGR valve
- 5Have a workshop check whether the engine control module software is up to date, and remedy the valve as needed
