What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the signal from the position sensor on the EGR valve. The code is set when the signal is judged to be incorrect, and EGR control then stops. The fault can lie in the connectors, the signal wire, the supply to the sensor or the sensor itself.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections, or a break in them
- Break in the signal wire from the position sensor
- No voltage supply to the position sensor
- Damaged position sensor
- Position sensor has stopped working
- Electromagnetic interference can sometimes have triggered the code
What you can do
- 1Note the fault code, erase it and test-drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the EGR valve can be closed and opened fully without sticking, since a sticking valve can give the same code
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the EGR valve several times and see whether it moves more freely afterwards
- 4Check the position sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation, and look for a break in the signal wire
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment measure the supply and signal to the position sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Message shown in the text display
What the fault can affect1
- No EGR control takes place
