What does this fault code mean?
The engine speed sensor at the flywheel gives the engine control module the top dead centre (TDC) position. If the signal is missing so that the position cannot be read, the code is set, and it shows when the engine runs.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the engine speed sensor connector
- Intermittent faults in the engine speed sensor wiring
- Incorrectly installed engine speed sensor
- Signal interference from nearby cables
What you can do
- 1Make sure the engine speed sensor is correctly fitted and free from damage and contamination
- 2Check that the connector to the engine speed sensor is firmly seated and clean
- 3Check whether the starter motor cable or other high-current cables run too close to the sensor wiring
- 4Have a workshop examine the flywheel for damage if the signal is still missing
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine is difficult to start
- Poor performance
What the fault can affect2
- The camshaft position sensor signal is used instead if it has been adapted
- Variable valve timing (VVT) control is blocked
