What does this fault code mean?
The speed signal to the engine control module comes from the ABS unit and the brake control module (BCM) over the CAN network. The code is set when the signal is missing or too high or too low, and the fault may then lie in the wiring, the connectors or one of the modules.
Possible causes
- Faulty speed signal to the ABS/BCM, which stores its own fault code
- Contact resistance in the CAN connections
- Break in one or both CAN wires
- One or both signal wires shorted to ground, supply voltage or each other
- Defective ABS/BCM
- Defective engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Start troubleshooting in the ABS/BCM, since that is where the speed signal originates
- 2Erase the fault code only once the fault in the other module is remedied and erased
- 3With a multimeter you can look for breaks and shorts between the CAN wires
- 4Since the fault concerns the ABS system, have a workshop check it before you drive if the fault remains
