What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has lost communication with the transmission control module (TCM) over the CAN network. The fault may be a broken CAN wire, a faulty transmission control module, or fault codes stored in the transmission module. The code may be a follow-on fault, in which case the transmission fault should be fixed first.

- Break in the CAN wiring
- Fault codes stored in the transmission control module (TCM)
- Faulty transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read and fix the codes in the transmission control module first, since this code may then be a follow-on fault
- 2Look for breaks, chafing or pinched sections in the CAN wiring between the engine and transmission control modules
- 3Check that the connectors at the control modules are fully seated and free from corrosion
- 4Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop read and check the transmission control module with diagnostic equipment
