What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the vehicle speed reported by the brake control module (BCM) with engine speed when fuel supply is cut, for example during engine braking. If the speed appears too low for a longer time, the code is set and the speedometer may show a wrong value.
Possible causes
- Wrong vehicle speed reading from the brake control module (BCM)
- Dirt on the wheel speed sensors, which makes the speed signal too low
What you can do
- 1Check that the wheel sensors are clean and that no debris is stuck to them, since dirt can make the speed signal too low
- 2Read and fix the codes in the brake control module (BCM) first, since the speed signal comes from there
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the speed value in live data with the speedometer during a test drive and see whether it follows the car's speed
- 4The brake control module (BCM) is part of the braking system: do not work on it or its wiring yourself. Have a workshop check it if the fault remains
- 5Clear the code only once the cause is fixed, then road test to see whether it returns
Symptoms you may notice2
- The environment lamp lights up
- The speedometer shows a wrong value
What the fault can affect2
- On cars with a manual gearbox, the speed signal is set to a default value
- On cars with an automatic gearbox, a secondary speed signal from the transmission control module (TCM) is used instead
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
