What does this fault code mean?
The ECM keeps track of engine oil condition through one combined sensor for temperature, level and quality. The code is set when the oil quality reading is faulty, and a message is shown in the text display. Although the code is named signal too low, the causes can lie in either a high or a low reading, such as wiring, connectors, or contaminated oil.
Possible causes
- Contaminated engine oil
- Poor quality engine oil
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Raised contact resistance or oxidation in the connector terminals
- Damaged oil level sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact
- 2Check that the oil is the correct grade and not contaminated, and change it if needed
- 3Check the connector at the sensor and look for oxidation or loose contacts
- 4With a multimeter, check that the signal wire has no contact with voltage or ground
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the oil quality and oil level values in live data with the ignition on and see whether either is unreasonable
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor and replace it if needed
