What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) gets setup data for the car over CAN from the central electronic module (CEM). The code is set when that signal is missing or faulty. Causes may be CAN faults, connector problems, or a used CEM that does not suit the car. The driver normally does not notice the fault.
Possible causes
- Signal from the CEM is missing or faulty
- Raised contact resistance or oxidation in the connector terminals
- Break in the CAN wiring to the central electronic module (CEM)
- Internal fault in another module on the same part of the CAN network
- CAN-related fault codes stored in the CEM
- The central electronic module (CEM) is not intended for this car, for example if a used module with other software or hardware has been fitted
What you can do
- 1Read the CAN-related codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and fix them first
- 2Check that the connectors on the CAN network between the modules are fully seated and free from oxidation
- 3With a multimeter, check that the CAN wires are not broken
- 4If the car has been fitted with a used control module, have a workshop check that it is right for the car
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
