What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) receives the car's configuration data from the central electronic module (CEM) over CAN. The code is set when that data cannot be stored correctly in the engine module. The driver normally does not notice the fault, and the cause may lie in the CAN network, in the connectors, or in a CEM that does not suit the car.
Possible causes
- CAN-related fault codes in the CEM
- Play, raised contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Break in the CAN wiring to the CEM
- Internal fault in the module itself
- A CEM not intended for the car, for example a used module with other software or hardware
What you can do
- 1Read the CAN-related codes in the CEM and fix them first
- 2Check the connectors in the CAN network and look for breaks or chafing in the wiring
- 3If the car has a used CEM fitted, have a workshop check that it is intended for this particular car
- 4Clear the code only once the causes are fixed, then road test to see whether it returns
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
