What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has registered a fault in the control of the electric cooling fan, either in the signal cable to the fan control module or in the control module itself. The fault concerns the fan that cools the engine when it gets too hot, so engine temperature can rise if the fan does not work. The electric cooling fan may keep running for a while after the engine has been switched off.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to supply voltage
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal cable
- Damaged electric cooling fan control module
- Electric cooling fan blade blocked
- Loose connection, contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
What you can do
- 1Check that nothing is blocking the cooling fan blade and that it turns easily with the ignition off
- 2Check the cooling fan connection for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not broken and is not in contact with ground or voltage
- 4With a diagnostic tool: activate the cooling fan and listen for it to start
- 5If none of the above finds the cause, have a workshop check the cooling fan control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- The electric cooling fan does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The electric cooling fan runs at a fixed, preset speed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
