What does this fault code mean?
Exhaust camshaft control is too slow: the engine control module requests a position, and if the exhaust camshaft has not reached it within a set time, the fault is registered. The check takes place while the engine is running and camshaft control is active.
Possible causes
- Low oil pressure
- Poor engine oil quality or contamination in the oil
- Damaged or sticking reset valve for the exhaust camshaft
- Mechanical fault inside the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Check the fuse that feeds the camshaft reset valve
- 2Check the oil level and oil condition, particularly for contamination
- 3With a diagnostic tool: compare the actual and requested exhaust camshaft positions in live data as the engine speed rises
- 4Have a workshop measure the oil pressure, clean the reset valve and check the oil passages in the cylinder head
- 5If none of this finds the cause, have a workshop replace the reset valve or check the VVT unit
Symptoms you may notice4
- The check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
- The engine is slow to start or cranks slowly
- The engine performs poorly and lacks power
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control for the exhaust valves is switched off
