What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has found that the actual position of the exhaust camshaft does not match the position it has requested. The code is set when the requested position is not reached.
Possible causes
- Low oil pressure
- Engine oil of poor quality
- Exhaust camshaft reset valve damaged or sticking
- Internal fault in the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Check the fuse that feeds the reset valve, especially if the engine will not start
- 2Look at the engine oil: level, colour and any contamination
- 3With a diagnostic tool: see in live data whether the exhaust camshaft reaches the requested position as the engine speed rises
- 4Have a workshop check the oil pressure and clean the reset valve, and see whether the oil passages in the cylinder head are blocked
- 5If the fault remains after this, have a workshop check the VVT unit
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp lit
- The engine is hard to start or cranks slowly
- The engine feels weaker and lacks power
- The engine hesitates or surges
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control for the exhaust valves is switched off
