What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) has registered too low a signal from the signal cable to the reset valve for the exhaust camshaft, and the code is set. The cause may be poor contact in the connections or the signal cable being short-circuited to ground.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance in the connections
    • Signal cable short-circuited to ground
    • Damaged exhaust camshaft reset valve

    What you can do

    1. 1Start with the fuse for the circuit to the valve
    2. 2Use a multimeter to check that the cable to the valve is not short-circuited to ground
    3. 3Check the connectors at the valve for contact resistance and oxidation
    4. 4Clear the code and see whether it returns while the engine runs
    5. 5If you find no fault, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the reset valve

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Malfunction indicator lamp lit

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
