ECM-618C - Exhaust camshaft control during cold start
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
A cold start means an engine start when the engine control module (ECM) requests heating of the catalytic converter. During that phase, while the engine runs and cam control is on, the control module compares the actual exhaust camshaft position with the requested position. If they do not agree, the code is set.
Possible causes
- Low oil pressure
- Poor engine oil quality
- Sticking reset valve for the exhaust camshaft
- A mechanical fault inside the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Check the fuse that feeds the camshaft reset valve
- 2Check the engine oil level and quality, especially whether it contains contamination
- 3Have a workshop check the oil pressure
- 4Have a workshop remove and clean the reset valve and check the oil passages in the cylinder head
- 5If the fault remains after this, have a workshop replace the reset valve or check the VVT unit
Symptoms you may notice4
- The malfunction indicator light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine is hard to start or cranks slowly
- Poor performance and lack of power
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control is switched off
