What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) and the alternator control module (ACM) communicate with each other over a signal cable. The code is set when the ECM receives word of an alternator fault or when communication between the modules breaks down. The battery can then discharge, because the alternator is not charging properly.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the link between the two control modules
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Worn carbon brushes in the alternator
- Damaged alternator control module (ACM)
- Damaged auxiliary drive belt or belt tensioner
- An alternator not built for LIN communication has been fitted
What you can do
- 1If the alternator has recently been replaced, check that it is intended for this car and for communication with the control modules
- 2Check that the alternator drive belt is correctly fitted, not worn, and that the belt tensioner works
- 3Check that the connector to the alternator control module is firmly seated and free from contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check the signal cable for breaks and for short circuits to ground or voltage
- 5With a diagnostic tool: start the engine and read the alternator charging current in live data
Symptoms you may notice3
- Message in the information display
- The battery discharges
- The alternator warning lamp is lit with the engine running
