What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) has registered an internal fault in the electric cooling fan, and the code is set. The cause may be poor contact, a missing supply voltage to the fan control module, a break or a short to ground in the wiring, or a damaged fan.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
    • No supply voltage to the cooling fan control module
    • Open or short-circuit to ground in the wiring
    • Damaged electric cooling fan

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fan blade is not blocked and turns easily with the ignition off
    2. 2With a diagnostic tool: activate the cooling fan's speed steps with the ignition on and see which ones work
    3. 3Check the fuse, the supply cable and the ground lead to the cooling fan
    4. 4Check the connectors between the engine control module and the fan control module for contact resistance and oxidation
    5. 5Use a multimeter to check that the cables between the control modules are not broken or short-circuited to ground

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The electric cooling fan does not work

    What the fault can affect1

    • The electric cooling fan is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
