What does this fault code mean?
The ECM keeps track of the engine temperature. When the signal from the engine temperature sensor shows a temperature above a set limit despite low load and low speed, the control module treats it as a fault. The cooling system should be checked first, because poor cooling can give the same picture.
Possible causes
- Too little coolant in the cooling system
- Clogged radiator
- Damaged cooling fan control module
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Damaged engine temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Check the coolant level in the expansion tank when the engine is cold
- 2See whether the radiator is clogged by dirt, leaves or damage
- 3With a diagnostic tool: activate the cooling fan at different speeds and check that it starts and runs normally
- 4Check the engine temperature sensor connector for looseness, oxidation and contact resistance
- 5If the fault remains once the cooling system is in order, have a workshop check the engine temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp lit
- The engine is hard to start
