What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has received a signal from the camshaft reset valve that does not match what is expected. The valve controls the camshaft position, so when the signal is wrong the camshaft cannot be set correctly. The fault mainly shows up as uneven idle and increased emissions.
Possible causes
- Incorrect signal
- The timing belt has slipped over its teeth
- Low oil pressure or poor oil quality
- Defective reset valve
- Mechanical fault in the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status in the diagnostic tool and see whether the code is active or stored, and whether other codes are stored
- 2Check the engine oil level and quality, and make sure the oil is not contaminated
- 3Have a workshop check the timing belt teeth and that the camshaft sits in the correct position
- 4Have a workshop check that the VVT unit and the reset valve work mechanically, and clean the valve if it is dirty
- 5Replace the reset valve if the fault remains after the checks above
Symptoms you may notice2
- Uneven idle
- Increased emissions
