What does this fault code mean?
The control module has registered a low or absent signal from the exhaust camshaft reset valve. The fault code is stored in that case, and the variable exhaust camshaft control is then switched off. The fault may be in the valve, in the wiring to it, or in the fuse for its power supply.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage, which may have blown a fuse
- Open circuit in the voltage supply wire
- Defective exhaust camshaft reset valve
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status and start the engine to see whether the fault is still present
- 2When the engine will not start, look at the fuse that feeds the reset valve. A blown fuse can cause the fault
- 3With a diagnostic tool, compare the actual exhaust camshaft angle with the target value in live data while engine speed is increased
- 4Check the connector at the reset valve. Oxidised or loose connectors can give high contact resistance and the fault
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground. Replace the valve if the wiring is sound but the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
- The engine does not start if a fuse in the circuit has blown
What the fault can affect1
- Variable exhaust camshaft control is switched off
