What does this fault code mean?

The fault code is set when the engine control module detects a signal that is too low on the wire to the electric cooling fan. After the engine is switched off the fan may run for a while, and how long depends on engine temperature, the temperature in the engine bay and the A/C system pressure.

    Possible causes

    • Short circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable
    • The electric cooling fan is damaged

    What you can do

    1. 1With the ignition off, check that the fan blades move freely and are not blocked
    2. 2Run the electric cooling fan through each speed step with the diagnostic tool and listen for it to start
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire between the engine control module and the fan control module has no open circuit or damage
    4. 4A blown fuse in the supply to the electric cooling fan means no current, so check that first
    5. 5Replace the fan control module if it cannot be activated at any speed and the wiring is intact

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The electric cooling fan does not work

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
