What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) continuously. The fault code is stored when the flow through the EGR system is too low, and the fault may be caused by an air leak in the intake system or by a clogged or damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake system
- Blocked or clogged EGR valve
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the EGR valve opens and closes fully without sticking. Dirt and soot can make it stick
- 2Check that the EGR valve and its connections are not blocked by soot
- 3Check the intake system for air leaks, since a leak affects the flow
- 4Have a workshop clean or replace the EGR valve, and carry out an adaptation after repair or replacement
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and listen for a ticking sound
Symptoms you may notice5
- Poor performance and lack of power, especially when pulling away from a standstill
- Uneven idle
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly, especially during acceleration
- The “Check engine” warning lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
- A text message appears in the display
What the fault can affect1
- Engine torque may be limited
