What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) continuously. The fault code is stored when the flow through the EGR is too high, and the fault may lie in a damaged or sticking EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Damaged EGR valve
- Sticking EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the EGR valve opens and closes fully without sticking. Dirt and soot can make it stick
- 2Check the EGR valve for damage
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve, and a ticking sound should be heard from it
- 4Replace the EGR valve if it is damaged. An adaptation must be carried out afterwards, which a workshop can do
- 5Inspect the seal ring and gasket on the EGR valve
Symptoms you may notice5
- Poorer performance
- Uneven idle
- The engine hesitates or runs jerkily at steady speed
- The “Check engine” lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
- The malfunction indicator lamp is lit
