What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module adjusts the angle of the exhaust camshaft through adaptation when it sits too far forward, ahead of the crankshaft. The fault code is stored when the adaptation value exceeds a certain level.
Possible causes
- Poor quality engine oil
- Misadjusted camshafts
- The timing belt has slipped off the teeth
- Sticking valve
- Mechanical fault in the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Check the engine oil level and quality, and look for contamination
- 2Have a workshop check that the timing belt is seated correctly and that the camshaft basic setting is right
- 3Have a workshop remove the reset valve and clear the oil passages in the cylinder head. Clean the valve as instructed
- 4Replace the reset valve if it is still defective after cleaning
- 5If the fault remains, the VVT unit may be damaged, which a workshop needs to judge
Symptoms you may notice4
- The malfunction indicator or the “Check engine” lamp lights or behaves abnormally
- The engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
- Poor performance and lack of power
- The engine hesitates or surges
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control is switched off
