What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module adjusts the angle of the exhaust camshaft through adaptation when it sits too far behind, after the crankshaft. The fault code is stored when the adaptation value falls below a certain level.
Possible causes
- Poor engine oil quality
- Incorrectly adjusted camshafts
- The timing belt has jumped over the teeth
What you can do
- 1Check that the engine oil is at the right level, of the right grade and clean
- 2Have a workshop check the engine oil pressure, since it affects the VVT control
- 3Have a workshop clean the reset valve and the oil passages in the cylinder head, and replace the valve if it is defective
- 4Replace the reset valve if it cannot be cleaned or if the fault remains after cleaning
- 5If everything else has been checked and the fault remains, the VVT unit may be defective, which a workshop will decide
Symptoms you may notice4
- The “Check engine” lamp lights or behaves abnormally
- The engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
- Lack of power and poor performance
- Hesitation or jerky running
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control for the exhaust is switched off
