What does this fault code mean?

Although the code is named flow too low, it applies when the airflow reading from the MAF sensor exceeds what the engine control module (ECM) expects. This can be caused by air leakage after the turbocharger, but also by hoses and valves in the turbo control system. The fault may be permanent or intermittent, so it is sometimes only visible now and then.

    Possible causes

    • Air leakage after the turbocharger
    • Hoses between the turbocharger and the turbocharger (TC) control valve have come loose or are blocked or damaged
    • Hoses between the turbocharger (TC) control valve and the pressure servo have come loose or are blocked or damaged
    • Faulty turbocharger (TC) control valve
    • Faulty pressure servo for the wastegate valve
    • Sticking wastegate valve

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Look for pinched, blocked or damaged hoses in the system between the turbocharger (TC) control valve and the intake
    3. 3With a diagnostic tool, activate the turbocharger (TC) control valve and listen for a click
    4. 4Look for air leakage between the turbocharger and the engine, for example at the charge air pipes and clamps
    5. 5Follow the air mass in live data during a road test and check that it rises and falls in step with the throttle
    6. 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check the wastegate valve's pressure servo and the function of the valve

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Check engine lamp lit or behaving abnormally
    • Poor performance or lack of power
    • Hesitation, surging or jerky running while driving, which can occur at any time

    What the fault can affect1

    • Boost pressure is lower

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
