What does this fault code mean?

The ECM monitors the wiring to the cooling fan serving the control module box. If the fan signal reaching the control module box reads too high, with the ignition on or the engine running, the code is set. The cause may be a signal wire that has been shorted to supply voltage, or a damaged fan.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
    • Damaged cooling fan

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the signal wire for open circuits and for a short to supply voltage, especially where the cable could chafe
    2. 2With the ignition off and the connector disconnected, use a multimeter to check whether the signal wire has voltage to ground (body)
    3. 3With diagnostic equipment, activate the cooling fan for the control modules and listen for it to start
    4. 4If the wire is intact but the fault remains, have a workshop try a new cooling fan

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
