ECM-68BD - Bypass valve, intercooler. Faulty signal
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) tracks the charge air cooler bypass valve and compares its position with the calculated position as it opens or closes. If the deviation becomes too large with the ignition on, the code is set. It may be caused by looseness or oxidation at the connector, a lead that is broken or shorted, a valve that binds, or a damaged valve.
Possible causes
- Loose connection, contact resistance or oxidation at the connector
- Open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage in the leads to the bypass valve
- Bypass valve binds or has jammed
- Damaged bypass valve
What you can do
- 1Inspect the bypass valve visually for damage and dirt that could make it bind or stick
- 2Check that the connector on the engine control module and on the bypass valve is fully engaged and free from oxidation
- 3With the ignition off and the connector disconnected, use a multimeter to check that the leads to the bypass valve are intact and have no contact with ground or voltage
- 4Read the code, clear it and road test the car; if it returns, have a workshop replace the bypass valve
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
