What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) controls the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) through an internal power stage. If the module detects a fault in the signal that drives the lamp, with the ignition on, the code is set. The fault may be a lead shorted to voltage or ground, a break in the signal wire, poor contact or an internal fault in the control module.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
    • Signal wire shorted to ground
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
    • Open circuit in the signal wire
    • Internal fault inside the ECM itself

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the MIL lights briefly when the ignition is switched on; if it does not, the fault may be in the lamp circuit
    2. 2Check the connectors at the engine control module and the instrument panel for contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
    4. 4If the fault remains and the connectors are clean, have a workshop check the signal wire and the engine control module
