What does this fault code mean?
The fault is permanent, so it is present now. The engine control module (ECM) treats a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) circuit that is shorted or broken as a fault and sets the code. This variant is caused by an open circuit in the ground lead, which makes the signal too high.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the ground lead
What you can do
- 1Check that the MIL lights briefly when the ignition is switched on, and note whether it stays lit
- 2With the ignition off and the connector disconnected, use a multimeter to check that the ground lead to the MIL is intact and has contact with the body
- 3Check the earth point and the connectors on the ground lead for oxidation, loose connections and damage
- 4Read the code, clear it and road test the car; if it returns and the ground lead is intact, have a workshop check the control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
