What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the immobilizer code against the central electronic module (CEM) before the engine is allowed to start. If that check cannot be made because communication between the modules is missing, the code is set with the ignition on. The engine then does not start. The cause may be a break in the communication, a CEM that is not programmed, or a damaged CEM.
Possible causes
- Communication between the CEM and the ECM is interrupted by an open circuit
- The CEM was never programmed and holds no immobilizer code
- Damaged central electronic module (CEM)
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and correct them first, since this code may be caused by missing CAN communication
- 2With the ignition off, check that the connectors between the CEM and the engine control module are firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 3If no codes are stored in the CEM, have a workshop try a new CEM
- 4Has the CEM been replaced recently? A new CEM must be programmed, which only a workshop can do
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine cranks but will not start
