What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) holds an immobilizer code that is unique to each car, and it is checked against the central electronic module (CEM) before the engine may start. If the engine control module is not programmed, or an internal fault is found in it, the code is set with the ignition on. The immobilizer code is then missing from the engine control module, and the engine does not start.
Possible causes
- The ECM has never been programmed and therefore has no immobilizer code
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the connectors to the engine control module are firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 2You cannot program the engine control module yourself; have a workshop try to program it
- 3If the engine control module is damaged, have a workshop replace it
- 4Once the workshop is finished, start the engine and check that the fault has gone
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine cranks but will not start
