What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the P and N gear selector signals, which travel over CAN. The code is set when the signal is missing or faulty, and then the starter motor does not turn. The malfunction indicator lamp is lit.
Possible causes
- Faulty CAN communication
- Fault in the transmission control module (TCM)
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM)
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check the battery voltage and that the fuses for the engine control module are intact
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the gear position in live data while you select P and N, and check that the value follows the selector
- 4Visually check that the connectors in the CAN network are secure
- 5Work on the brake control module (BCM) should be done by a workshop, as it controls the braking system
Symptoms you may notice2
- The starter motor does not turn
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
