What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has registered that its monitoring of the engine speed signal is faulty. The signal comes from the engine speed (RPM) sensor and the camshaft sensor, and the fault is most often in connectors or wiring, but a damaged sensor can also cause it. The fault applies to the C30, C70 (06-), S40 (04-), S60 (-09), V50, V70, V70 XC and XC90.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connectors or an open circuit in the wiring to the engine speed (RPM) sensor
- Contact resistance in the connectors or an open circuit in the wiring to the camshaft sensor
- Damaged engine speed (RPM) sensor
- Damaged camshaft sensor
- Internal fault in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connectors at the engine speed sensor and the camshaft sensor for loose connections and oxidation
- 3Check the wiring to both sensors for breaks, chafing and pinching
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the engine speed in live data at idle and check that the value is steady without jumps
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment measure the sensors and their supply and earth
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine performs worse than normal
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly at steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- Engine output may be limited
