What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the engine speed signal and has registered that it is faulty. The fault may be due to poor connections or open wiring to the engine speed (RPM) sensor or the camshaft sensor, but also to a damaged sensor. The fault applies to the C30, C70 (06-), S40 (04-), S60 (-09), V50, V70, V70 XC and XC90.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connectors or an open circuit in the wiring to the engine speed (RPM) sensor
- Contact resistance in the connectors or an open circuit in the wiring to the camshaft sensor
- Damaged engine speed (RPM) sensor
- Damaged camshaft sensor
- Internal fault in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Read the code, note it, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the connectors to the engine speed sensor and the camshaft sensor are secure and free from corrosion
- 3Check the wiring between the sensors and the engine control module for breaks and chafing
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the engine speed value in live data with the camshaft sensor value and check that they follow each other
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensors and the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- Reduced engine performance
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly at a steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- Engine output may be limited
