What does this fault code mean?
Before allowing the engine to start, the ECM compares the vehicle serial number kept in the BCM. If the serial number is missing or does not match, the fault code is set and the engine does not start. The fault applies to the C30, C70 (06-), S40 (04-) and V50.
Possible causes
- Wrong ignition key
- Low battery voltage
- Plug at the ECM is loose, or contacts are corroded
- A break or noise on the link between the CEM and the ECM
- Faulty CAN communication
What you can do
- 1Check that you are using the correct ignition key and that the battery voltage is normal
- 2Check that the connectors to the engine control module are secure and free from contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 4Work on the brake control module (BCM) should be done by a workshop, as it controls the braking system
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment compare the serial numbers in the brake control module and the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine does not start, sometimes or all the time
